The following is an index of part of Cyclopedia of Victoria. 19038 Edited by James Smith. This index only covers people residing in the North East of Victoria.

For all the names listed below, short biographies of variable length (between 100 and 1,000 words) are included in the book. Over half of the book entries include a photograph of the subject and/or their business or property. Or their prize Ayreshire bull !!! For example, one of the short biographies is;
Mr. THOMAS FLANAGAN, Storekeeper, Tatura, was born in Bullengarook in the year 1869, and educated in his native town. He was engaged in farming pursuits until he reached the age of twenty-three, when he removed to New South Wales, and remained there for two years. In 1895 he went to Tatura, and there commenced business on a small scale. His trade increasing rapidly, however, he was forced to seek larger premises. Mr. Flanagan accordingly purchased the block of land on which he erected his present spacious premises, and now does one of the largest businesses in storekeeping lines in the district.

The biographies appear to be written, or paid for, by the subjects for promotion of themselves or of their business. For example, most of the subjects tried their hand at gold mining, very few succeeded, but none say that they failed. They instead claim it "did not meet expectations", "was not entirely satisfactory" or similar.

This index has been compiled by Peter Lakeman from the original book and is copyright.
