"The Winton Cemetery was established in 1878, eight acres of Crown Land being set aside for the purpose. The first trustees were Patrick CASS, Edward WILLIAMS, David LINDSAY and James LEE. However, the Cemetery was in use long before it was gazetted. The first recorded burial in Grave No. 1 was that of Patrick COSTELLO, aged 38 years, who died in December, 1862." [Marion Webster. Winton Primary School No. 1870 Centenary - 1877-1977].
Other burials before 1878, according to headstone inscriptions, were Michael COSTELLO, died 1868 age 8 yrs, Peter PHELAN, died 1868 infant, John LYNCH, died 1869 infant, Daniel PHELAN, died 1871 age 37 yrs, Mary PHELAN, died 1871 age 3 yrs, Daniel PHELAN, died 1871 infant, John CHAMBERS, died 1872 age 50 yrs, Mary LINDSAY nee WALKER, died 1872 age 19 yrs, Jane SAWYER nee WILLIAMS, died 1875 age 33 yrs and John BOWER, died 1876 age 56 yrs.
