JARROTT William Thomas (1895 – 09/06/1917)     [MYRRHEE]
Wangaratta Chronicle Wednesday July 11, 1917
KILLED IN ACTION. SERGEANT-MAJOR W T JARROTT. Yesterday Mr and Mrs Thos JARROTT, of Myrrhee, received the painful news that their son, Sergeant-Major William Thomas JARROTT had been killed in action in France on 9th June. The information was conveyed to the parents by Mr TOWNSEND, of St Columb's Hall, who met Mr and Mrs JARROTT on the arrival of the Whitfield train at Wangaratta. Sgt.-Major JARROTT was 21 years of age, a native of Moyhu, and eldest son. He enlisted in January 1916, with the 37th Battalion. He trained at Seymour, and went through the N.C.O's at Port Melbourne, and rose to the rank of sergeant, and when he left he carried that rank. He went through several training schools in England and also the musketry school at Heyling Island. He landed in France on 23rd November, and went into action a few days later. He fought at Armentiers and also in other big pushes. He was slightly wounded in the face on one occasion, but did not leave the lines. While on the filed he was raised to the rank of Sergeant-Major. Since he left Australia he has corresponded regularly with his parents, and interesting extracts from some of the letters were published in "The Chronicle". Mr and Mrs JARROTT received word on 27th June that their son was reported missing, and since then they have had four letters from him. Prior to enlisting Sgt.-Major JARROTT took a deep interest in church and Sunday School matters, and was a teacher at Holy Trinity Cathedral Sunday School. He was a very smart young fellow, and gained his merit certificate at an early age, and after doing a course at the High School joined the Education Department, his first appointment being at Myrtleford school. While in Wangaratta he took an interest in the Rowing Club, and played football with local teams. He was of a quiet nature, and his pleasant manner made him popular with his mates and scholars and with all who knew him. A brother, Pte J M JARROTT, enlisted at the same time, and is still fighting in France. Brothers of the deceased young hero are Albert E, Reginald J, Algernon V and Aubery F JARROTT, and his sisters are Annie Myrtle, Martha L and Edith A M JARROTT, all of whom live at Myrrhee. The sympathy of the people of the district will go out to Mr and Mrs JARROTT in their loss of a devoted son; but they have the satisfaction of knowing that he did his duty bravely and honorably.

Another old resident of Wangaratta and one of the early settlers in the North-Eastern district in the person of Mr. Benjamin MARSHALL died on Thursday, and the news of his death was received with expressions of regret in this and the Myrrhee districts, where he was well-known and held in general esteem. The late Mr. MARSHALL was full of activity and despite his advancing years followed his usual occupation till three weeks ago. Till then he always enjoyed remarkably good health due probably to the energetic work in his younger days. He was seized with a complication of internal troubles, which resulted fatally, the end coming peacefully at his residence, Rowan street, on Thursday morning. Deceased, who was 65 years of age was born in Deptford, Kent (England), and when 9 years of age, was brought by his parents with other members of the family to Melbourne. He came to the North-East district as soon as he was able to earn his own living and followed various occupations. In 1875 he married Miss Charlotte MEYER, sister of Mr. F. MEYER and Mrs. G. BATTIN (Wangaratta), and Mrs. O'SHEA (Tallarook), at Wangaratta. Thirty years ago he selected land on the 15-Mile Creek, Myrrhee, and followed farming till 14 years ago, when he removed to Wangaratta. Two years later he suffered a sad bereavement in the loss of his wife. The vicissitudes of life did not interfere with his duties as a father of a large family. He worked hard for their welfare and reared a family that is a credit to him. For the past seven or eight years he was employed at the Buffalo Brewery, where he was equally respected by the proprietors and fellow employees. His funeral, which took place yesterday, was largely attended. The remains were interred at the Wangaratta cemetery. Rev. Cannon CUE conducted the burial service. Mr. J.J. HANDLEY had charge of the funeral arrangements. The members of deceased's family are Messrs. Charles, George, Benjamin and Fred MARSHALL (Wangaratta) William MARSHALL (W. Australia), Mrs. J. MR ARCHIBALD PATTERSON. While engaged in shunting operations at the new railway yards at North Melbourne late on Friday night, Archibald PATTERSON, aged 27 years, of Argyle street, Moonee Ponds, was run over and killed. His body was shockingly mutilated, and the death apparently was instantaneous. This brief notice in Saturday's metropolitan papers conveyed the news of a tragedy involving a well known district family. Deceased was a son of Mr and Mrs Wm PATTERSON, of Myrrhee, and well known and highly respected in the district. A wife and three young children are left to mourn their loss. There are three brothers and four sisters. The interment took place in Melbourne.

PATTERSON Sydney Livingstone (10/05/1891 - 22/10/1892)    [MYRRHEE]
Wangaratta Chronicle, Wednesday October 26,1892
MAGISTERIAL INQUIRY AT MYRRHEE. Mr C L DOBBIN, P.M., held a magisterial inquiry at Myrrhee, Whitfield, on Sunday afternoon into the circumstances of the death of an infant son of Mr George PATTERSON. George PATTERSON deposed: Am a farmer living at Myrrhee, and father of the child deceased, who was born on 1st May, 1891. I was away from home yesterday in Wangaratta, and when I returned home last night at about half past eleven o'clock my wife told me that the child was dead. I saw him this morning. My wife told me that the child was coughing in a croupy way, and she noticed that he became worse. She started out to Wangaratta with him to see a doctor, but she had not gone more than three-quarters of a mile from the house when the child died quietly in her arms. Mrs PATTERSON, sworn, said the child had had a cold off and on lately, but there was nothing serious until last Thursday, when the cough returned and a hoarseness in the throat came with it. He was the same next day, and at 9 o'clock on the same night he had convulsions and they continued through the night. Next day (Saturday) he was no better and about noon she started out with him for Wangaratta, but the child died when she was a short distance from home, and she returned. The child had previously been healthy and she did not know of anything to account for death except the cough. Dr Benjamin Clay HUTCHINSON, sworn, deposed to examination of the body of the deceased infant. There were no external marks of violence, and having heard the evidence of the parents he was of opinion that the cause of death was bronchitis followed by convulsions. The child was of healthy appearance and well nourished. Mr DOBBIN's finding was in accordance with medical testimony.

PRENTICE Henry Leslie (1820 - 11/04/1885)     [MYRRHEE]
Wangaratta Chronicle, Wednesday April 15,1885
Death of Mr PRENTICE.– We notice in the Melbourne prints the death of an old colonist and inhabitant of Wangaratta, whose body was found floating in the Yarra, near Kew, on Saturday morning. Mr Henry Leslie PRENTICE. Deceased was aged 66 years, and during his residence here was manager for Mr Hugh GLASS, of Myrrhee and Bungamero Stations. Since the failure of the Oriental Bank, in which he had £5000 worth of shares, it has preyed upon his mind. The deceased arrived in this colony 40 years ago, and became a partner in the profits of a station at Smythesdale. An inquest was held by Mr CHANDLER, the district coroner, at Kew, on Monday. The deceased had been out of employment for some time past, and was pecuniarly distressed, which caused him to become despondent. He disappeared from his home at 105 Victoria-parade, Fitzroy, several days ago, and on Thursday wrote to Mr John FILSON, of Flemington, whom he had known for 20 years, complaining that persons whom he had assisted on their arrival in this colony in his affluent days had refused to reciprocate his kindness. He also stated in that letter that his body would be found in the Yarra. Mr FILSON communicated with the police and the persons with whom deceased lodged, and a search was made for him. On Friday his hat and stick were found on the bank of the Yarra at Kew. The river was dragged in the vicinity without any trace of the body being found, but on the following day it was found floating lower down the stream. The facts that PRENTICE said in his letter to Mr FILSON that he would be found in the Yarra, and the finding of his hat and stick on the river bank led his friends to believe that he had committed suicide, but on the formal post mortem examination being held by Dr RALPH, it was ascertained that death resulted from serious apoplexy, and not from drowning as was at first supposed. It is presumed that the contemplation of his intended self-destruction so excited the deceased as to accelerate the fit of apoplexy to which he was predisposed, and that he died on the river bank.

PRENTICE Henry Leslie (1843 - 07/09/1895)     [MYRRHEE]
Wangaratta Chronicle, Wednesday September 11, 1895
MYRRHEE. - Death of Mr Henry PRENTICE. - The sudden death of Mr H L PRENTICE, of Myrrhee South, was heard of with much regret on Saturday. The deceased had not shown serious signs of ill-health, and on Friday evening ate his tea as usual. After tea he sat down in the kitchen, and was smoking and reading a book. His two daughters were present, and deceased conversed with them and seemed in good health and spirits. Between 8 and 9 o'clock his heavy breathing attracted the attention of his daughters, and one of them touched him on the shoulder, saying 'Papa.' He then put his head down on the table and gave three gasps, and when his daughter lifted him up he fell backwards into her arms and died. He had not complained of bad health lately, but it was noticed that he was depressed in spirits at times. Mr PRENTICE had been a widower for the past twelve years, and was 52 years of age. As a doctor had not attended him recently the coroner, Mr C L DOBBIN, held an inquiry into the cause of death on Sunday, and Misses Edith and Catherine Sarah PRENTICE, daughters of deceased, related the circumstances, as stated above. Dr F J McCARDEL gave evidence. He said he had examined the body externally and found no marks of violence or injury to account for death, the deceased having been physically strong. After hearing the evidence and from careful inquiry he was convinced that death resulted from syncope, following upon valvular disease of the heart. Constable C A ROBERTSON, Hedi, also gave evidence, and the coroner recorded a verdict that deceased died from syncope as stated by the medical practitioner.
