Arcadia
Approximate Location: 10km NE of Shepparton.
Comments: Farming district. Also the name of a
local station taken up in 1841 by Gregor McGregor and named after Arcadia in Greece.
Schools: SS1880 opened 1877, part-time with Arcadia east in
1883.
Arcadia East SS2519 opened in 1883 part-time with Karramomus South SS2141 until mid 1884,
part-time with Karramomus North SS2055 (1890-1891), closed 1892.
Arcadia South SS2972 operated from 1889 to 1919.
Ardmona
Approximate Location: 10km west of Shepparton.
Comments: Name derived from the Ardmona Estate which
was sold to a syndicate in 1886 for subdivision.
Schools: SS1563 Mooroopna District was opened in 1874 and
the name of the school changed to Ardmona in 1890. The school was still operating in 2004.
Buildings: A public hall is in existence (details of
it are unknown).
Bunbartha
Approximate Location: Rural area 20km NNW of Shepparton on the
Barmah-Shepparton Road.
Churches: A Bible Christian Church (later to be united
with Wesleyan) was erected in 1882.
Byrneside
Approximate Location: 20km west of Shepparton and a few
kilometres NW of Tatura on the Midland Highway.
Comments: Initially called The Junction in the 1870s,
became Toolamba North in 1878, then Baldwinside/Baldwinsville after
William Baldwin, commissioner of United Echuca and Waranga Waterworks 1882. Renamed
Byrneside on 1 January 1895 after district surveyor Lewis Byrne.
Schools: SS1680 Baldwinsville opened in 1876 and closed sometime after 1970.
Caniambo
Approximate Location: 25km SE of Shepparton. 30km north
of Violet Town.
Comments: Rural district. Also the name of a
local station taken up in 1843. May have also been known as Gowangardie.
Schools: SS2230 Gowangardie opened in 1880 and name changed to
Caniambo in 1904.

Churches: Primitive Methodists held services here from
1880 with their first minister being Rev Mr Snooks.
Buildings: A public hall previously
existed and may or may not have survived (details of it are unknown).
Cashel
Approximate Location: A few kilometres south of Dookie.
Comments: Surveyed and proclaimed as Dookie South in
1872 bur name changed to Cashel in 1876.

Congupna
Approximate Location: 8km north of Shepparton.
Comments: Congupna Road and Koongoopna were variant names.
Schools: SS2164 Congupna opened in 1879 and closed in 1918.
SS2428 Congupna West opened in 1881 and closed in 1903. The school was also known as the
Tallygaroopna Railway Station School and later as Karpool.
SS2563 Shepparton North opened in 1884. After 1894 the school operated part-time SS2150
Pine lodge North for some period. It closed in 1904, re-opened in 1905 with the new name
of Congupna and was still operational in 2004.
Churches: The Wesleyan Methodists held services from
1874 and built a church in 1880. The pioneer preachers were Mr Freeman Rev D.S.
Lowe.
Buildings: A public hall is in existence (details of
it are unknown).
Cooma
Approximate Location: Locality about 10km south of Kyabram.
Comments: Also called Kyabram South in its earlier days.

Schools: SS1558 Kyabram South opened in 1875, the name was
changed to Cooma some time about 1930 and the school closed in 1943.
Coomboona
Approximate Location: 5km NE of Mooroopna North and about 12km NNW of Shepparton.
Schools: SS3093 opened in 1891 but closed at some unknown date then re-opened in 1912.
It was closed in 1916 and 1917 due to flooding of the Goulburn River, was burnt down twice before 1960,
and closed some time between 1970 and 2004.
Cosgrove
Approximate Location: 20km ENE of Shepparton on the Dookie-Shepparton Road.
Schools: SS2466 opened in 1882 and closed sometime after 1970. The school was
also known as Pine Lodge East.
Cosgrove South
Approximate Location: 20km ESE of Shepparton on the Midland Highway
and 7 km south of Cosgrove.
Schools: SS2297 Pine Lodge South opened in 1880, worked part-time
with SS2466 Pine Lodge East (see Cosgrove) in 1885, part-time with SS2515 Marionvale in 1886,
presumably returning to full-time operation in 1887. The school was renamed Cosgrove South
in 1894 and closed in 1944. Also see Pine Lodge South.
Dhurringle
Approximate Location: 25km ENE of Shepparton.
Schools: SS3944 opened in 1917 and was still operating in 2004.
Dookie
Approximate Location: 10km north of Murchison.
Comments: The Dookie Agricultural College is located about 7 km
south of Dookie.
Also see Cashel
Services: A post office operated from the Dookie North school
for some time from 1881.
Schools: Rural School 136 opened in 1873, became SS1342 in 1874
and closed in January 1875.
SS1527 Dookie South opened at Cashel (which is 2-3 km SE of Dookie) in about 1875. In 1883
the school appears to have worked part-time with SS2524 Waggarandall West (see Wattville)
and with SS1865 Dookie North. In 1893 the school was moved to a site 1-2 km south of Dookie
and the school was renamed Dookie. A new school was built in 1907 and was still operational
in 2004 at Baldock Street.
SS1865 Dookie North (location unknown) opened in 1878, worked part-time with SS1527 Dookie
South during the later part of 1883 before closing early 1884.
SS3907 Currawa opened in 1915 to serve the children of teachers at the Dookie Agricultural
College and was still operating form the college in 2004.

Gillieston
Approximate Location: Dairying town 20km WNW of Shepparton and 6km SSW of Undera.
Comments: Named after Duncan Gillies who was a MLA for Rodney and later the Premier of Victorian.
Schools: SS2275 opened in 1880, closed in 1905, re-opened in 1913,
closed in 1943, re-opened in 1950 and permanently closed some time after 1970.
Girgarre East
Approximate Location: Locality about 8km SE of Girgarre and near the Midland Highway.

Gowangardie
Approximate Location: 30km SE of Shepparton, 25km north
of Violet Town.
Comments: Farming district. Also the name of a
local station taken up in 1840.
Schools: SS2873 Gowangardie East opened in 1888, closed 1913,
re-opened part-time with SS1626 Tamleugh in 1915 and closed 1916. Possibly also
operated part-time with SS3333 Nalinga in early 1915.

Grahamvale
Approximate Location: North eastern
'suburb' of Shepparton.
Schools: SS3696 Shepparton Estate opened in 1911, was renamed Grahamvale
later that year after a local MLA and was still operating in 2004.
Churches: Methodist services were held by Rev E Smith
from 1914 in Orrvale and from 1915 in Grahamvale.
Harston
Approximate Location: About 10km WSW of Tatura.
Comments: Also known as Girgarre East until 1885.
Hendersyde
Approximate Location: Area 15km SW of Shepparton and about 7km ESE of Tatura.
Comments: Named after John Henderson.
Karramomus North
Approximate Location: 30km south of Shepparton.
Comments: Farming District. Named after a Greek settler.
May also have just been called Karramomus
Schools: SS2055 Karramomus North opened 1878.
SS2141 Karramomus South opened in 1879, part-time with SS2519 Arcadia East (1883-1884),
closed 1892.
Katandra
Approximate Location: 25km NE of Shepparton.
Comments: Named after a local station.
Schools: A private school existed prior to the opening of SS1965
Katandra in 1877 and closed some time after 1970.

Katandra North
Approximate Location: Now non-existent community about 6km NNE of Katandra.
Schools: SS2192 opened in 1879. It was called Dunbulbalane in its
earlier days even though it was 10km away from the present day Dunbulbalane. It closed in 1913,
reopened in 1922 and permanently closed in 1924.
Katandra West
Approximate Location: 4km NW of Katandra.
Schools: SS4401 opened in 1928 and was still operating in 2004.
Kialla
Approximate Location: About 8km SSE of Shepparton
Comments: Also known as Kialla Central.
Schools: SS1366 Kialla opened in 1874 in River Road. In
1902 the building was moved to Mitchell Road. It is still operating in Central Kialla Road in 2004.

Kialla East
Approximate Location: 15km SE of Shepparton and 10km
east of Kialla [Central].
Schools: SS1453 Kialla East opened in 1874 and closed in 1895.
SS2746 Caniambo opened in 1886 at Caniambo, part-time with Tamleugh North SS2453 (1902),
closed 1903, re-opened on a different site 1908, renamed Kialla East 1910 and closed in 1952.

Kialla Park
Approximate Location: Southern 'suburb' of Shepparton.
Kialla West
Approximate Location: 10km SE of Shepparton and a
few kilometres west of Kialla [Central].
Schools: SS1727 opened in 1876 and was still operational in 2004.

Koonda
Approximate Location: 20km north of Violet Town.
Comments: Rural locality, called Upotipotpon West until
1896. Koonda is aboriginal word for sun or day.
Schools: SS2631 Upotipotpon West opened in
1885, renamed to Koonda in 1896, operated part-time with SS25626 Upotipotpon (1915),
full-time (1916), closed 1938, re-opened 1944 and closed 1952.

Lemnos
Approximate Location: About 8km NE of Shepparton.
Schools: SS4269 opened in 1927 and was still operating in 2004.
Marionvale
Approximate Location: 20km NE of Shepparton.
Schools: SS2515 opened in 1882, operated part-time with SS2297
Pine Lodge South (at Cosgrove South) in 1886, presumably resuming full-time operation in
1887, and closed in 1953.
Churches: Methodist services were held by Rev Norman
Smith from 1933.
Merrigum
Approximate Location: 25km west of Shepparton.
Comments: Also known as Harrison c1887.
Schools: SS1874 Merrigum opened in 1877 and was still operational in 2004.
The school was sometimes unofficially known as Merrigum North to distinguish it from the Merrigum
South School.
SS2971 Merrigum South (location unknown) opened in 1889 and closed in 1908.
Buildings: A Mechanics' Institute building was
constructed in about 1889 and enlarged in 1895. It is now used for community
purposes.

Moorilim
Approximate Location: 10km east of Murchison.
Comments: Rural locality, formerly called Muddy Creek
Bridge. Moorilim is a corruption of the name of a local aboriginal tribe ngooraialum.
Schools: SS1524 Muddy Creek Bridge opened in 1875, name changed
to Moorilim prior to 1903, closed 1943 and re-opened 1949.
Mooroopna
Approximate Location: Now a 'suburb' of Shepparton on the western
side of the Goulburn River.
Comments: First town land sales were in 1874.
Schools: A private school operated part-time from 1873.
SS1432 Mooroopna opened in 1874 and was still operating in O'Brien Street in 2004.
SS5008 Mooroopna Park opened in the mid 1970s and was still operating in MacIsaac Street in 2004.
Mooroopna High School (#8073) opened in 1972 and was still operating in 2004.
Churches: United Methodist Free Church services were
held in the old Athaneum Hall prior to a church being built 1877. Mooroopna and
Tatura were part of the Shepparton 'Circuit' until they were excised in 1915.
Buildings: The first Mechanics' Institute Hall
was constructed about 1875 on the river bank next to the punt and was moved forward
to its present site in 1906. The building was replaced in 1933.

Mooroopna North
Approximate Location: 10km NW of Mooroopna on the Echuca-Mooroopna Road.
Schools: SS1612 opened in 1875 and was still operational in 2004.
Mooroopna North West
Approximate Location: locality some 5km west of Mooroopna North.

Murchison
Approximate Location: 30km south of Shepparton on the Goulburn Valley Highway.
Comments: Named after an early settler Captain John Murchison.
The township was surveyed and proclaimed in 1854.
Schools: A school attached to the Goulburn Aboriginal Protectorate
Station operated from 1842 until 1850.
A Presbyterian School opened in 1859. It became Common School 420 in 1862 and in about 1871 became SS1126.
The school closed some time between 1970 and 2004.
SS1050 Murchison North opened as a common school in 1869. The school was initially about
6 km NE of Murchison and in 1925 was located closer to Murchison but closed in the late 1920s.
SS2669 Murchison South opened in 1885 and closed in 1908. It appears to have been located
some 10km SSW of Murchison and north of the Goulburn Weir.
SS2960 Murchison Railway Station operated from 1890 until 1892 and was located east of the railway line
(i.e. further east of Murchison).
SS4302 Bayunga opened in 1926 after the subdivision of Harper's Estate and closed in 1962.
Buildings: The Mechanics' Institute hall was
built in 1875 and served a number of community purposes before being demolished in 1970.

Murchison East
Approximate Location: About 5km east of Murchison.
Nalinga
Approximate Location: 25km east of Shepparton, 16km
from Dookie.
Comments: The township was surveyed and proclaimed in 1875.
Schools: SS3333 Nalinga opened in 1899, part-time with
SS2913 Upotipotpon South (1909), part-time with SS2873 Gowangardie (1915), closed 1915,
re-opened 1934 and closed 1967.
Orrvale
Approximate Location: South eastern "suburb" of Shepparton.
Comments: Named after William Orr who was a MLC from
1901-1904.
Schools: SS805 Shepparton Estate opened in about 1913, was
transferred to a new site in about 1915 and renamed Orrvale and was still operating in 2004.
Churches: Methodist services were held by Rev E Smith
from 1914 in Orrvale and from 1915 in Grahamvale.
Pine Lodge
Approximate Location: 10km ENE of Shepparton.
Schools: SS2099 opened in 1878 and closed some time after 1970.
SS2150 Pine Lodge North (location unknown) opened in 1879 and operated intermittently until 1916
when it operated continuously until its closure in 1949. For some period about 1894, it appears
to have operated part-time with SS2563 Shepparton North (see Congupna).
Churches: United Methodists established a cause here
in 1877 under Rev T.A. Bayley and Primitive Methodists were established under Mr
S Richards in 1880. The present(?) church was built in 1924.
Buildings: The Pine Lodge & Katandra
hall previously existed and may or may not have survived (details of it are unknown).

Pine Lodge South
Approximate Location: 15 km east of Shepparton on the Midland Highway
and 7km SSE of Pine Lodge.
Schools: SS2513 Pine Lodge South No. 2 opened in 1882 and closed in 1935.
Note that another school SS2297 also with the Pine Lodge South name was operating at the same time
in Cosgrove South.
Cemetery: See the Pine Lodge cemetery.
Shepparton
Approximate Location: 30km NW of Benalla and about halfway between Benalla and Echuca.
Comments: McGuires Punt was an early name for the place that later became Shepparton.
The township was surveyed and proclaimed in 1855).
Sheppardton and Sheppardtown were also alternate names in the past.
Schools: SS1469 opened in 1874 and in 1957 it became an adjunct of SS4742 Shepparton.
SS1733 Shepparton Central (location unknown) opened in 1876 and closed in 1909.
SS3264 Shepparton Park (5km west of Shepparton) opened in 1896 and closed in 1952.
SS4657 Shepparton North opened in 1951 and was still operating in 2004 as the Gowrie Street Primary School.

SS4666 Shepparton South opened in 1953 and was still operating in 2004 as the St. Georges Road Primary School.
SS4742 Bourchier Street Primary School opened in 1957 and was still operating in 2004.
SS4943 Wilmot Street Primary School opened in 1957 and was still operating in 2004.
An Agricultural High School opened in 1909 which eventually became the Shepparton High School which
was still operating in 2004 on two campuses.
The Shepparton Technical School opened in 1953, the Shepparton Girls High School opened in 1960 and
the Shepparton South Technical School opened in 1966, but all of these appear to have closed prior to 2004.

Churches: United Methodist Free Church
established in 1874 with Rev R.L. Reed as the first minister. Wesleyans erected
a chapel in the same building in 1879 with their first minister being Rev J.J.
Brown. The building was replaced in 1885 and again in 1908.
Buildings: A Mechanics'
Institute hall was constructed on its present site in Wyndham Street in 1884
under the name of the Shepparton Free Library and Workingmen's Club. It
consisted of a library and billiard room. The billiard room was taken over for
library use in 1857.
A court house was built in High Street in 1939 and was still operating in 2000 as a County Court.

Shepparton East
Approximate Location: 5km east of the centre of Shepparton.
Schools: SS1713 opened in 1876 and was still operational in 2004.
Shepparton North
Approximate Location: Area about 8km north Shepparton.
Schools: SS1713 opened in 1876 and was still operational in 2004.
St Germains
Approximate Location: 25km NW of Shepparton on the Echuca-Mooroopna Road.
Schools: A private school operated from 1871.
SS1555 opened in 1879 and closed some time between 1970 and 2004.
Stanhope South
Approximate Location: Locality about 8km SE of Stanhope.
Stewarton
Approximate Location: 35km east of Shepparton.
Comments: Farming district. Area originally called The Duck Ponds,
but later named after settler, Tylden Stewart.
Schools: SS2094 opened in 1878 and closed some time
between 1970 and 2004.
SS2137 Duck Ponds opened in 1879, worked part-time with SS2094 Stewarton (1881-1883), closed 1883.
Tallygaroopna
Approximate Location: 15km north of Shepparton on the Goulburn Valley Highway,
Comments: Initially called Coldwelltown after a local landowner.
Schools: SS1816 Tallygaroopna West opened in 1877 (5 km west of Tallygaroopna)
and closed in 1938.
SS1914 Tallygaroopna (also known as Tallygaroopna South) opened in 1877 and closed in 1899.
SS3067 opened in 1890 and was still operational in 2004.

Churches: United Methodist Free Church
was established in 1874 and the Wesleyans held services in 1878. Rev R.L. Reed
and Rev J.J.
Brown (both of Shepparton) were also pioneers of these churches. The present(?)
brick church was erected in 1914.
Buildings: A timber Mechanics' Institute and
Free Library was opened in the 1860s and hosted SS3067 and well as church
services. The building was demolished and replaced by the current Memorial Hall
in 1924.

Tamleugh North
Approximate Location: 20km SE of Shepparton, 20km NW of Violet Town
and 12km NW of Tamleugh.

Tamleugh West
Approximate Location: 10km NW of Tamleugh and 5km south of Tamleugh North.

Tatura
Approximate Location: 20km SW of Shepparton.
Comments: Township proclaimed 16 Mar 1874.
Schools: A private school existed prior to SS1441 Tatura opening in 1873.
SS1441 was still operating in 2004.
Churches: Initially Methodist services were held by
Reverends O Dowling and R.L. Reed in the Mechanics' hall. A church was built in
1898. Mooroopna and Tatura were part of the Shepparton 'Circuit' until they were
excised in 1915.
Buildings: A
Mechanics' Institute hall was constructed in the 1880s with various additions
over the years including the addition of Victory Hall in 1926.

Approximate Location: 7km east of Tatura.
Comments: Tatura East was initially called Toolamba West.
Toolamba

Toolamba West
Approximate Location: 12km west of Toolamba and 5km SSE of Tatura.
Comments: Toolamba West was initially called Toolamba South.
Tatura East was initially called Toolamba West.
Schools: SS1674 Toolamba West opened in 1876 and closed some time after 1970.
The school was reputedly located closer to Tatura East than to Toolamba West. It was also known as Toolamba Central.
SS2728 Toolamba South opened in 1885 and was closed in 1910 when it burnt down, re-opened 1921 and
closed some time after 1970. The school described as "4 miles SE of Tatura" appears to be located
close to the present Toolamba West township.
Undera
Approximate Location: 20km NW of Shepparton on the Echuca-Mooroopna Road.
Schools: SS1771 opened in 1876 and was still operational in 2004.
Undera North
Approximate Location: 8km north of Undera.
Schools: SS2444 opened in 1882 and closed in 1930.
Zeerust
Approximate Location: 15km north of Shepparton.
Comments: Named after a Transvaal (South Africa) town.
Schools: SS4359 Gribbens Estate opened in 1928, was renamed Zeerust
in 1929, and was still operating in 2004.
