Angustown
Approximate Location: 10km NE of Bailieston and 10km NW of Nagambie on the north edge of Reedy Lake.
Comments: Named after Angus Cameron, who had a sawmill in the area. Also known as Bailieston North.
Schools: SS2947 Bailieston North opened in 1889 and closed in 1903. The school was renamed Angustown during that period.

Arcadia South
Approximate Location: Locality about 7 km SE of Arcadia and 15km east of Murchison, close to the Murchison - Violet Town Road.
Schools: SS2972 opened in 1889 and closed in 1919.

Avenel
Approximate Location: 35km south west of Euroa and 15km north east of Seymour on Hume Freeway.
Comments: Agricultural town named after an English town. Henry Hughes had a station here of the same name in 1838. First township blocks sold in 1849.
Schools: A primary school has serviced the town since the 1850s initially as a CofE school, then as a National school, then as a Common school and finally as SS8 from the 1860s. A new schoolhouse was built on the current site in Livingstone Street in 1874 and the school was still operating in 2006.
Cemetery: For details of the cemetery click here.
Buildings: A Court of Petty Sessions sat in the town from 1854. In 1876 a court house was built on the corner of Queen and Ewing Streets. The last court sat in 1966 and was officially closed in 1969.

Baileston
Approximate Location: 10km west of Nagambie.
Comments: Baillieston is a variant spelling.
Schools: SS870 Coy's Digging opened in 1866 and closed in 1943. The name of the school and the town was changed to Bailieston in 1903.

Baileston East
Approximate Location: About 6km east of Bailieston and 7km NW of Nagambie.
Comments: The surrounding area has also been called Norrilim and Reedy Lake.
Schools: SS1478 was opened at both Reedy Lake and Norrilim South in 1874 operating on alternate days. In 1880 the school at Reedy Lake was closed and the Norrilim school operated full-time. In 1901/2 the Norrilim South school was operating part-time with SS2858 Bailleston South (see Wirrate). In 1905 the Norrilim South school was moved to a new site and in 1911 it was renamed Bailieston East. The school closed in 1918.

Balmattum
Approximate Location: Halfway between Euroa and Violet Town on railway line north of Hume Freeway.
Comments: Initially called Duck Ponds (not to be confused with another Duck Ponds near Stewarton to the north east).
Schools: SS743 Duck Ponds opened at Balmattum East in 1865, was replaced by a new building in 1880 and closed in 1951. The building is currently used for community purposes.
Post Office: A Post Office opened in 1874 and its name changed to Balmattum East in 1891.

Boho
Approximate Location: 5 km South of Violet Town.
Comments: Rural locality named after locality near Enniskillen in Ireland.
Schools: Opened as a Capitation School in 1874, became SS1394 in 1876, part-time with SS2709 Five Mile Creek (1916-1921), SS2833 Tarnook (1940-1942), closed 1942, reopened later 1942, and closed 1951
SS2796 Boho East operated from 1887 until 1894.
Buildings: The Boho Hall (which may been a Mechanics' Institute hall) opened in 1886 but has not survived.

Boho South
Approximate Location: 20km SSE of Violet Town.
Schools: SS3150 opened in 1892, part-time with SS3845 Too Rour (1931-1932 and 1935-1938) and closed in the mid 1970s and the building is currently used as a camp by a Melbourne based school.
Communications: A manual telephone exchange operated from 1915 until 1969.
Buildings: A Mechanic's Institute Hall which was initially located at Marraweeny is still in use here.

Branjee
Approximate Location: About 15km WNW of Euroa and a few kilometres SW of Molka..
Schools: SS2685 operated from 1885 until 1940 and was sited south of the town and just south of Curries Road.. The school also appears to be known as Branjee North.

Castle Creek
Approximate Location: 6km south of Euroa.
Comments: Rural locality situated on the Castle Creek and the Euroa-Mansfield Road.
Schools: SS1621 Castle Creek opened in 1875, operated part-time with Shean's Creek (dates unknown), closed in late 1940s.

Creek Junction
Approximate Location: 25km SSE of Euroa and 10km NE of Strathbogie.
Communications: A manual telephone exchange began in 1922 and was replaced by an automatic exchange in 1969.
 

Creighton
Approximate Location: Less than 10km WSW of Euroa on the railway line (halfway between Longwood and Euroa).
Comments: There was a busy railway station here, it closed in 1965. Initially (1887) the railway station here was named Synon's Siding, this was changed Creighton's Creek the following year and later to Creighton. As the School was also called Creighton's Creek, one could guess that the town was also called Creighton's Creek at some stage and that the current Creighton Creek was earlier called Creighton's Creek Upper..

Schools: SS2644 Creighton's Creek opened in 1884, operated part-time with SS2333 Rigg's Creek and SS3091 Monea North (both some time before 1901), burnt down and closed in 1944.
Post Office: A Post Office operated from the railway station in 1889.

Creighton's Creek
Approximate Location: 13km south of Euroa and 13km SSE of Creighton.
Comments: Rural district. William Abraham Creighton held Five Mile Creek station in 1839. See also Creighton (above).
Schools: SS3297 Creighton's Creek Upper operated from 1898 on Pearson�s land and was later re-sited near-by. It operated until 1944 and the building was moved into Euroa school.
Buildings: There was a creamery and a church there. The church burnt down in a bushfire in the 1990s. [Loretta]

Dargalong
Approximate Location: 13km south of Murchison, west of Euroa.
Comments: Rural locality formerly called Bunganail. Some source claim that Dargalong was an earlier name for Moorilim (to its north), perhaps it is on of those cases where the name was moved from one locale to another.
Schools: SS1154 Bunganail opened in 1871, was destroyed by fire in 1890, then operated in temporary premises until its closure in 1892. Initially it was sited on the SE corner of the intersection of the Goulburn Valley Highway and the Murchison-Longwood Road.
SS1440 opened in Bunganail in 1875, part-time with Molka (1897-1907), name changed to Dargalong sometime, and the school closed about 1950. This school was located just SW of the intersection of Ewarts and Dargalong Roads.

Earlston.
Approximate Location: 10km north of Violet Town.
Comments: Rural locality named by settler Wallace after his birthplace in Selkirkshire, Scotland.
Schools: SS2850 opened 1887, closed 1929, re-opened 1939, closed 1951.

Euroa
Approximate Location: One and a half hours drive from Melbourne up the Hume Freeway, situated between Benalla and Seymour.
Comments: Settled in approx.1853 in an area generally known as Faithfull's Creek. It was, and still is, chiefly a wool growing/farming area, although vineyards are becoming popular. In 1853 there was a population of 150, and in 2003 there were 2,800. (Loretta)

Schools: SS217 was a Church of England school which opened in 1856 and closed in 1876 when Euroa SS1706 opened.
SS245 was a Catholic Church school which opened in 1861 and closed in 1862.
SS1706 opened in 1876, became a Higher Elementary School about 1919. A High school opened on the same site in 1956, and the High School was re-sited in 1961.
Churches: Mr W. S. Reeves held Methodist services in the homes of Mr Stewart and also the Elliott family from 1874 until they were held in the Mechanics' Institute Hall (where the Shire Hall now stands) near the Seven Creeks bridge. A church was erected in 1881.
A new Church of England building was opened in 1885.
A new Catholic church was opened in 1887 next to their c1867 church.
The Salvation Army commenced holding services in 1890.
Catholic, Church of England, Uniting, Seven Day Adventist, Baptist and Latter Day Saints currently operate in the town.
Communications: A Post office opened in in 1854, was replaced in 1884 and burnt down in 1889. A public telegraph office opened in the railway station in 1876 and a telephone exchange opened in 1908.
Organisations: A Freemasons Lodges exists.
Buildings: An impressive court house was built in in Binney Street in 1892 and closed in 1989.
A Temperance hall existed in Kirkland Street prior to 1884.
A Good Templars Hall was built in Kirkland Street in 1884.
A Public Hall was built in Railway Street in 1885
The Bijou Hall in Kirkland Street was opened in 1902.
A new Masonic Temple was built at the corner of Templeton and Railway Streets in 1906.

War Memorials: An Avenue of Honour, a memorial in front of the RSL, and Honour Rolls in both the RSL and the Farmers Arms Museum.

Faithfull's Creek
Approximate Location: Area about 10km east of Euroa.
Comments: Squatters George and William Faithfull overlanded in 1838. Also general name of the area (including Euroa before it was named).
Schools: SS2701 Faithfull's Creek operated from 1885 until 1901, most likely part-time during those years with Miepoll, Rigg's Creek, Balmattum and Branjee [North].
SS3078 Faithfull's Creek Upper opened part-time Shean's Creek SS1265 in 1890, closed possibly in 1892.

Gooram
Approximate Location: 15km south of Euroa on/close to the Euroa Mansfield Road.
Comments: Farming district. Named after aboriginal word for hunting ground.
An alternative name was Gooram Gong.
Schools: SS1755 Upper Castle Creek opened in 1876 at the corner of Killen Hill Rd and Church Lane. It was called Upper Castle Creek to distinguish it from the Castle Creek school much closer to Euroa, however it changed its name to Gooram in 1897 to reflect the name of the area. In the 1920s it was part-time with SS1815 Seven Creek. It moved to the north side of the Euroa-Mansfield Rd in 1934, closed in 1975 and the building was destroyed by bushfires in 1990.
SS1815 Gooram Gooram Gong operated from 1877 until 1885 and the building was removed. It was situated on Forlonge Memorial Road across the Seven Creek and a few kilometres east of the township of Gooram. The name appears to have come from the name of the parish. See also Seven Creeks where the school number is re-used.
Churches: A Presbyterian Church opened in 1887.
Buildings: A Post office was operating here in 1890 but has since gone. [Loretta]
A creamery also operated in the town. [Loretta]

Goulburn Weir
Approximate Location: About 13km SSW of Murchison.
Schools: SS3358 opened in 1898.

Graytown
Approximate Location: About 15km west of Nagambie.
Comments: An old goldmining area with gold discovered in 1868.
Also known as Spring Creek.
Was named after Wilson Gray MLA.

Harry's Creek
Approximate Location: 10km south of Violet Town.
Comments: Rural locality named after early settler Harry Aldridge.
Schools: SS2843 opened 1887, part-time with SS2709 Five Mile Creek (1895) and closed 1902.

Hughes Creek
Approximate Location: 15km north of Yea.
Comments: Henry Kent Hughes squatted here in 1838.
Schools: SS2642 Hughes Creek (also known as Tarcombe) opened in 1884, part-time with SS2770 Kobyboyn (1886-1888), closed 1888, re-opened 1890, closed 1915, re-opened 1925, closed 1943.

Kelvin View
Approximate Location: 10km SE of Euroa.
Comments: Farming district. Initially the area was called Mountain View, but name changed to avoid confusion with Mountain View in Gippsland. Mrs George Charman used name of Scottish birthplace. An alternate theory is that it was named after a wine shanty (Mrs Charman also had a wine shanty here presumably of the same name).
Schools: SS3480 Kelvin View operated from 1904 to 1970.
Post Office: A Post Office operated from the early 1900s until 1967.

Kirwans Bridge
Approximate Location: Township 5km north of Nagambie on the west side of a narrow part of the Goulburn Weir where the Kirwan Bridge crosses the weir.

Kithbrook
Approximate Location: 5km north of Strathbogie.
Comments: Initially called Strathbogie West. There was a hall, tennis courts and golf course here at one time. [Loretta]
Schools: SS2267 Strathbogie West, later known as Kithbrook, opened in 1880 on 2 acres relinquished by Harold Humphrey on the Spring Creek road. The school closed about 1970.
Post Office: The Strathbogie West Post Office opened in 1921 and within a few months its name was changed to Kithbrook It closed in 1970.

Locksley
Approximate Location: Halfway between Avenel and Euroa, but slightly closer to Avenel.
Comments: Farming District named in 1886 after Tennyson's poem Locksley Hall. Town surveyed 1887.
Schools: In an area previously known as Burnt Creek, SS2648 Monea North opened in 1884 in temporary premises before moving into a schoolhouse in 1886about a km NE of the present township of Locksley. The school was renamed Locksley about 1889 and it closed in about 1972.

Longwood
Approximate Location: Halfway between Avenel and Euroa, slightly closer to Euroa.
Comments: Named after Napoleon Bonaparte's home on St Helena. John Brook was a squatter here in 1844. Hugh Middlemiss commenced his �Salutation Inn� on the Sydney road around this time, where the coaches branched off to the goldfields in the Mansfield/Jamieson area [Loretta]. After the railway went through in 1874, the towns folk of Longwood gradually moved there and a settlement called Longwood Rail was established at the station. In 1895 the settlement was surveyed and proclaimed as Longwood West. After the 1951 review,  the name of the then Longwood was altered to Old Longwood  and Longwood West was renamed Longwood.

Schools: SS2707 opened in 1885.
A National School opened in Longwood East in 1861, became SS367 in 1863 and closed in 1888.
Communications: A Post office opened in in 1852 by Hugh Middlemiss. Its name was changed from Longwood to Longwood East in 1881. A public telegraph office opened in the railway station in 1881. A new Post Office (presumably at the current Longwood) in or before 1888.
Buildings: The Longwood Mechanics' Institute was built in 1884 with a library added the the following year. It no longer exists.

Mangalore
Approximate Location: 10km north of Seymour.
Comments: Station held 1838 by Joseph and John Anderson (John then serving at Mangalore, India). Timber industry. Township surveyed and proclaimed in 1881.
Schools: SS969 Mangalore opened in 1868, renamed to Mangalore West in 1911 and closed in 1926. SS2257 (known initially as Gravel Pits school until 1893 as it was on the junction of the railway line to the gravel pits) operated from 1880 to 1949.
Churches: A Roman Catholic church opened in 1890.

Marraweeney
Approximate Location: 15km south of Violet Town.
Schools: SS2165 opened 1879, may have worked part-time with Harry's Creek, closed 1894.
Post Office: A Post Office opened in 1886, included a manual telephone exchange in 1916, and closed in 1954.
Buildings: There was a Mechanics Institute here which was moved to Boho South where it is still in use today. [Loretta]
Cemetery: A cemetery was also gazetted, but never used. [Loretta]

Miepoll
Approximate Location: 20km NW of Euroa.
Comments: Farming district. Reputably named after a magistrate.
Schools: SS2480 operated from 1882 to 1954 and the building still stands on its original site.
Post Office: A Post Office opened in 1881.
Buildings: Being on the Violet Town / Bendigo road there was a Post Office, shop, wine shanty and a creamery here.
A hall was built in 1901 and remains in use today, 2006. [Loretta]

Miepoll South
Approximate Location: 8km SSE of Miepoll and 12km NNW Euroa.
Buildings: There was a creamery here.

Mitchellstown
Approximate Location: 10km SW of Nagambie.
Comments: Farming district. Originally called Deegay Ponds although it was also known as The Old Crossing Place as Major Mitchell crossed the Goulburn River here in 1836. Re-named Mitchelton in 1874, now Mitchellstown.

Moglonemby
Approximate Location: 15km north of Euroa and a few kilometres north of Miepoll South.
Comments: Area appears to be also known as Miepoll East.
Schools: SS2911 Moglonemby opened in 1889, closed 1929, re-opened 1939 and closed 1951.

Buildings: A Mechanics' Institute hall existed (erection date unknown) and is now in use as a public hall.

Molka
Approximate Location: 15km NW of Euroa.
Comments: Farming District. Aboriginal word for shield.
Schools: SS2763 opened in 1886 on a site on the SE corner of the intersection of Williams Road and the Murchison-Longwood Road. It closed 1892, re-opened part-time with SS1440 Bunganail (Dargalong) in 1897 until it closed in 1907.

Monea
Approximate Location: 5km NE of Avenel.
Comments: Rural district. Monea is a name used in Northern Ireland for a sheep and cattle farm.
Schools: SS2679 Monea operated from 1885 to 1911.
SS3091 Monea North opened in 1891, operated part-time with SS2644 Creighton's Creek and closed in 1907. This school appears to have been sited NE of Locksley and NW of Longwood.
SS3339 Monea West operated from 1900 until 1909.

Moonlight Flat
Approximate Location: 1868 goldfield near Graytown.

Moormbool [West]
Approximate Location: 20km west of Nagambie and 25km NE of Heathcote.
Comments: Town appears to have been called Moormbool and Moormbool West, but the current official name is Moormbool West.

Nagambie
Approximate Location: 30km north of Seymour.
Comments: Named after the aboriginal word for lagoon. The township was surveyed in 1870 and proclaimed in 1877.
Schools: The Goulburn Valley School SS1104 opened in 1870 (a Catholic School and the Wahring Private School were operating prior to this). Name changed to Nagambie SS in late 1870s. Still operating in 2004.
Churches: In 1872-1874, a brick  Roman Catholic church was built in High Street.
Buildings: A public hall is in existence (details of it are unknown).
Newspapers: See both Nagambie and Goulburn newspapers.
 

Old Longwood
Approximate Location: Locality about 3 km SE of the current Longwood.
Comments: The original township of Longwood was surveyed and proclaimed in 1850 but the population abandoned the town in favour of Longwood West when the railway station was built there in 1874. After the 1951 review,  the name of Longwood was altered to Old Longwood  and Longwood West was renamed Longwood.
The town was Also known as Longwood East.

Pranjip
Approximate Location: Halfway between Murchison and Longwood.
Comments: Rural district. Name is possibly a corruption of the aboriginal word branjep which is a possum skin covering.
Schools: SS2794 operated from 1887 until 1948. It was located  a few kilometres SE of the intersection of Pranjip and Shepparton Roads.

Reedy Lake
Approximate Location: Between Angustown and Bailieston East, and 10km NW of Nagambie.
Comments: Obviously a lake and a lightly populated surrounding area.

Rigg's Creek
Approximate Location: 10km north of Euroa.
Comments: Faming district
Schools: SS2333 opened 1881, operated part-time with Faithfull's Creek and SS2644 Creighton's Creek some time prior to 1901, burnt down 1926, part-time with SS2737 Tamleugh West (1933-1934), SS2913 Upotipotpon South (1935-1937), closed 1937.

Ruffy
Approximate Location: 5km east of Terip Terip.
Comments: Named after settler J. Ruffy.
Schools: SS2785 opened in 1886, part-time with SS3169 Terip Terip in 1926 and closed in 2004.
Buildings:  The Mechanics' Institute hall was built in the 1890s and in 1904 they moved into a newly erected hall on a different site which is still in use.
Two churches, a hotel/Post Office/store and a creamery existed.

Seven Creeks
Approximate Location: About 15 km SSE of Euroa and about 4 km NE of Gooram.
Comments: Rural locality situated on the Seven Creeks and east of the Euroa-Mansfield Road.
Schools: SS1815 had previously been used for the Gooram Gooram Gong school  which closed in  1885 (see Gooram). In 1923 SS1815 Seven Creeks opened on a different site slightly closer to Gooram (this time just west of Seven Creek), closed in 1926, re-opened in 1927 and permanently closed in 1929. For some of this period it operated part-time with SS1755 Gooram. [Thanks to Loretta for determining the history and locations of these Gooram schools]

Shadforth
Approximate Location: 10km NW of Violet Town on Stony Creek.
Comments: Named after Lieut-Col Thomas Shadforth (son of Sydney businessman) who served at Sebastopol during Crimean War.
Schools: SS2326 opened in 1881 and replaced by SS2913 Upotipotpon South in 1888.

Shean's Creek
Approximate Location: 10km SE of Euroa.
Comments: Farming district named after a local settler.
Schools: SS1265 operated from 1874 to 1953 on the corner of Shean�s Creek and Strathbogie Roads. It operated part-time with Castle Creek and Faithfull's Creek Upper (1890-1892) for part of its life.

Strathbogie
Approximate Location: 20km SE of Euroa. There is a small township here - store, garage, school, church, hall, sporting ground. It had a butter factory until mid 1930 and a hotel until mid 1950.
Comments: Rural locality. Name of  John Kissock�s Station in 1843. Named after Strathbogie (valley of Bogie Water) in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Schools: SS2181 Strathbogie opened in 1879, closed 1880 due to scarlet fever, closed 1881 due to whooping cough, re-opened. The school was nearly 2 km out of the township, it wasn�t until about the 1960s that it was finally moved into the township.
SS4580 Strathbogie East opened in 1938 or 1939 and closed in 1947.
SS2274 Strathbogie South operated from 1880 to 1911 when it was renamed and renumbered to SS3570 Strathbogie North East, part-time with SS3845 Too Rour (1939-1942) and has since closed.
SS4589 Strathbogie South opened in 1941 and has since closed.
Post Office: A Post Office opened in 1878.
Churches: A Presbyterian Church opened in 1885.
Buildings: A public hall previously existed and may or may not have survived (details of it are unknown).
The Strathbogie Protestant Hall opened in 1889.

Tabilk
Approximate Location: 10km south of Nagambie.
Comments: Rural locality. Aboriginal name for the area.
Schools: SS951 opened in 1868 and closed between 1970 and 2004.

Tamleugh
Approximate Location: 10km NW of Violet Town.
Comments:
Schools: SS1626 Moglonemby opened in 1875, name changed to Tamleugh in 1881, closed 1910, re-opened part-time with Gowangardie East SS2873 in 1915 and closed in 1916.
SS3966 Tamleugh Central opened part-time with SS2453 Tamleugh North in 1918, full-time later in 1918 and closed 1927.
SS2453 Tamleugh North opened 1882, operated part-time with neighbouring schools until 1903, closed 1915, re-opened part-time with SS3966 Tamleugh Central in 1918, destroyed by fire in 1918 and 1946. It closed some time between 1970 and 2004.
SS2737 Tamleugh West opened in 1886, part-time with SS2333 Rigg's Creek in 1933 and closed 1934.

Tarcombe
Approximate Location: SE of Avenel.
Comments: Tarcomb was the name of a station there in the 1840s.
Schools: See Hughes Creek.

Upotipotpon
Approximate Location: 20km NW of Benalla.
Comments: Farming District. Station of same name held by Edward Grimes 1841. Pootong pootong is aboriginal for plenty of grass.
Schools: SS2526 Upotipotpon opened in 1882 part-time with SS2445 Goomalibee, part-time with SS2631 Koonda (1915), closed 1916.
SS2913 Upotipotpon South opened in 1888, part-time with SS3333 Nalinga (1909), closed (1912), re-opened part-time with Rigg's Creek (1935-1937), full-time (1937), replaced by SS2850 Earlston in 1939.

Violet Town
Approximate Location: Halfway between Euroa and Benalla.
Comments: Area also known as Violet Ponds (named by Major Mitchell's men who found wild violets growing by a chain of ponds), and as Honeysuckle Creek. It was surveyed and proclaimed as Violet Creek in 1838 (the first inland town in the colony of port Phillip to be surveyed) but the name was changed to Violet Creek in the 1850s.
Minor gold discoveries in the 1850s.
Schools: SS640 opened in 1858 and is still operating.
SS1815 Seven Creeks was relocated From Gooram to Five Mile Creek in 1923, it closed 1926, re-opened 1927 and closed 1929.
Churches: Approval was given in 1860 for Mr Walton to hold monthly services, but it unclear when or whether  they actually began. Wesleyans had built a chapel in Crocus St in 1866 on land presented by Mr Hillias. Interest appeared to have waned  and the chapel was moved to Euroa. In 1877, Shepparton ministers provided a monthly service. A new building was erected in 1880 and replaced in 1908.
Buildings:  A brick Mechanics' Institute hall was built in 1888. During its time it has also held court sittings and council meetings. In about 1920 it was renamed to the Memorial Hall. The building was demolished in 1964 and shire building now occupies the spot.

Wahring
Approximate Location: 10km north of Nagambie on the Goulburn Valley Highway.
Comments: Rural district. Aboriginal name for the place. Formerly spelt Waaring.
Schools: SS1352 operated from 1874 to 1891. Re-opened in 1920, closed 1952, re-opened in 1960 and closed some time between 1970 and 2004. It was initially located close to Kirwans Bridge but eventually was sited on the Wahring-Euroa Road.

Wirrate
Approximate Location: Rural locality 8km west of Nagambie.
Comments: Initially called Bailieston South.
Schools: SS2858 Bailieston South opened in 1889, closed in 1901, re-opened in 1902 part-time with SS1478 Norrilim South, closed in 1903 and re-opened in 1910. The school was renamed Wirrate in 1928 and closed in 1952.

Wondoomarook
Approximate Location: Near Strathbogie South.
Comments: Rural locality. From aboriginal phrase meaning place for person on hilltop.
Schools: SS3478 operated from 1905 to 1919.
Buildings: A Mechanics' Institute hall may have previously existed here, and if so has not survived.

Wormangal/Wormangel
Approximate Location: East of Nagambie.
Comments: Rural locality.
Schools: SS1446 operated intermittently between 1874 and 1910.
