Extra comments: The Pioneer Cemetery had the first of about 73 burials in 1858. But because the "this place was found impossible to dig graves deep enough on account of the slate bottom", it was declared in 1859  that a second cemetery on Two Mile creek (by the current Hume Freeway) be used. This "Old" cemetery  opened in 1860 and closed in 1881 because of many complaints that it was to far from town, too wet and swampy, it was unfit for burials and that the graves were haphazardly arranged. The board at the gate states there are over 1000 burials there although the sad part being there would be less than 100 headstones. It also appears that burials also took place in the Pioneer cemetery during this period.  The cemetery in use today commenced in 1881 and is called the "New" cemetery! [Thanks to Loretta & others]
